Prayer Before Class

How to pray before starting class

Gathering your school children together in prayer is an ideal way to begin a class. Prayer stills the body, focuses the mind, and reminds us of what is really important in life. As you pray you may wish to invite your students to make some kind of physical preparation as well, such as closing eyes, bringing their hands together or folding arms, depending on the age range involved. These small steps will help to bring a moment of stillness and remind us that something special is about to happen. Before praying, you may also want to remind them of who they are about to talk to, for example by saying "we're about to talk to the one who made all the beautiful things we see in nature, who loves us and cares deeply for each one of us here". This page features a number of good short prayers suitable for in person or online use with your class:

Prayer Before Class

Dear Lord and Father of all,

Thank you for today.
Thank you for ways in which you provide for us all. For Your protection and love we thank you.
Help us to focus our hearts and minds now on what we are about to learn.
Inspire us by Your Holy Spirit as we listen and write.
Guide us by your eternal light as we discover more about the world around us.

We ask all this in the name of Jesus.
Amen.

A Students Prayer

by St Thomas Aquinas
This prayer may be useful to say with older teenagers and college students:-

Come, Holy Spirit, Divine Creator, true source of light and fountain of wisdom! Pour forth your brilliance upon my dense intellect, dissipate the darkness which covers me, that of sin and of ignorance. Grant me a penetrating mind to understand, a retentive memory, method and ease in learning, the lucidity to comprehend, and abundant grace in expressing myself. Guide the beginning of my work, direct its progress, and bring it to successful completion. This I ask through Jesus Christ, true God and true man, living and reigning with You and the Father, forever and ever.
Amen.
